Cali Deli, Menteng, Jakarta

I love Vietnamese sandwiches.  I love Vietnamese coffee. Heck, I love Vietnamese cuisine full stop.

My obsession with the sandwiches didn’t actually start when I went on my school trip to Vietnam in 2002… I can’t remember eating any of them there?  Just tons of Pho and spring rolls!!!  The love affair began later on, in 2004, when I moved to Sydney as a poor undergraduate and discovered a place down the road selling Vietnamese pork and chicken rolls for $2.50.

Cali Deli, Menteng, JakartaLater still, I discovered the holy grail of Vietnamese-style rolls in Sydney at Mascot’s Hong Ha bakery (also known as Red Roll… I saw one of these in Bandung one time!!  Need to check it out), not far from my office… We used to go on Hong Ha runs at least once a week.

But Cali Deli is the only place in Jakarta that I’ve found with the good gear.  Not only are the sandwiches delish, you can also enjoy them outside in a leafy courtyard that has a mister and fans to keep you cool in the tropical heat, as well as big lounges for groups.

Today, I tried the lemongrass chicken roll and a piping hot cup of Vietnamese coffee, served kopi susu style with condensed sweet milk.  Unfortunately here they don’t serve it drip-style, but it’s still very nice.

The hollowed out baguette roll is full of sprightly ingredients and the bread is crunchy and fresh, cut into three pieces for polite eating. There are plenty of vegetables on the roll… lettuce, slightly pickled carrots, cucumber, onion, coriander and a light dressing.  I’ve been here once before with some friends and we tried some of the other flavors on the menu and they were all really good.  You can easily share around the pieces of the rolls to mix and match.  And the price is good too.  The coffee and the roll set me back around Rp 55,000 ++.  The courtyard is a lovely place to sit quietly with a book as well and the staff are attentive but not over the top.

And it’s right across the road from the Jalan Surabaya antique market, which I will write about next!

Yum! I love Cali Deli. They deliver, so we should order up a bunch of subs sometime for the switch-change, after you’re done with your evening classes.

I’ve probably sobbed to you before about how there used to be a Red Roll in the Semanggi food court. It died before I started working at the Globe. Oh, the tragedy.

I even blogged it once: I didn’t realize at the time that it was Vietnamese, haha; I think it was the first Vietnamese sub I’d ever had.

    Yes, lets!

The Hong Ha bakery in Mascot, that I linked to a review of above, is where the Red Roll chain originated from I believe. Sooooo good. You always have to queue out the door. We used to send the salespeople to do a run for the office, they had the time to wait and would talk to potential clients in the line haha. I don’t think the Red Roll shops in Sydney ever sold meatball subs though? Just chicken rolls and the banh mie.

Semanggi so needs a decent sandwich shop. Surely one of the bakso joints could be sacrificed!

Hello there! I thought I would slide in a quick comment seeing that I’ve spent the better part of the past half an hour browsing through your posts. I’m really impressed with the quality of blog writing you’ve got yourself here, and I will undoubtedly be back to say good day again in the near future. Anyway I will not use up anymore of your time, I simply wanted to say hello there and enjoy the summer, eh.

This sandwich is so authentic in such away that you will catch the atmosphere of sitting on the low bench style of street hawker in most of the city in Vietnam. The only difference is there you only need to pay max of 15,000 Vietnam Dong which is about equals to 1.00 USD. But this will not avoid the fact that, once more, the recipe is really a Vietnamese.

And for those who looking another Vietnamese cuisine, I advise the ‘Do an Resto’. My regular visit is in Mall Artha Gading. The ‘pho bo’ is the closest ones to the original mix and sure you won’t miss ‘goi cuon’, the spring rolls made by fresh vegetable, stewed prawn and white noodle rolled in one delicious bite. Sorry for not adding the the right ancient mark on that vietnamese word on this reply 🙂

Hope this will help for those who are crazy for the Nam’s street food..
