Today was Independence Day here in Indonesia, celebrating 64 years of independence following Dutch colonial rule. It was pretty quiet today, because this year the day ended up being a Monday, making a long weekend so a lot of people left town apparently. But in my local kampung, there were quite a few gatherings where kids were playing special games to mark the occasion, including kerupuk (shrimp cracker) eating competitions like the one pictured above.
This one is a game where the kids walk along balancing a marble on top of a spoon. If they drop it, they have to go back to the start. It takes lots of concentration!
The younger kids also played a ball relay game. Some of them were dressed up in traditional costumes.
Sizing up the competition.
There was a bit of a dispute about the rules though haha.
