Had a yummy dinner at a Chinese restaurant on Saturday night.  This is my mango pudding dessert. I found it so delightfully kitsch, and I think having it served on a table with a white table cloth added to that effect…  it tasted yum though.  The rest of our meal was delicious as well.  The restaurant decor reminded me so much of all the lame touristy Chinese restaurants in Sydney's Chinatown though haha.

    Totally agree.
Ah yat is one of my most frequently visited restaurant in Jakarta – and for a place that serves 6 million rupiahs-a-plate abalone, the decor is ostentatiously BAD. Worst than those touristy chinese restaurants in Sydney’s haymarket, IMHO.
But you know what – this is Indonesia we’re talking about after all. Kitsch RULES in Jakarta – remembering that most people who visit ah yat are those loaded Chinese businessmen aged 40 or above (with their equally kitschy gold rolexes and gaudy hairdos). These people live in houses and mansions with SIMILAR decor to ah yat’s – as you might be aware of. I should know better – most of my relatives are like that.
