The jungle town of Bukit Lawang has a rocky river flowing through it.  Not so long ago, a flash flood in the river wiped away most of the town.  But now, on the weekends, locals flock from Medan to cool off in this tropical rainforest river.

This bridge was shaky and wobbly, but the other bridge to cross the river on the other side was even more scary because there was nothing to hold on to on the sides (plus I was carrying my 20kg backpack!  Scary)!  I took the top three images shooting down on the river from this bridge.  Lots of kids thought it was funny to come and jump on the suspension bridge near me while I was shooting, making it shake heaps.  Nice!

The flash flood in Bukit Lawang happened on Nov 2nd 2003. A terrible time for everyone there and so many locals lost so many members of their families.
But 7 years on the place is definitely back on the map and thriving once more.
I too, love Indonesia and esp Bukit Lawang and have been suggesting to travellers to go back there from about April 2005 after I visited for 19 days from Jan to Feb 2005.

Thanks for stopping by the blog Pamela. It was so sad to see that Bukit Lawang was affected by such a terrible disaster, but the people have built back now and the community seems to be doing really well. I really enjoyed my time staying there.
